How much does Radical Prostatectomy Surgery Cost?

What is Radical Prostatectomy?

A radical prostatectomy is a surgical approach in which cancerous part of the prostate gland and nearby seminal vesicles are removed. The surgery is done to cure prostate cancer in men, problems related to urinary retention, and other pelvis cancers.

Which doctor treats prostate cancer?

A Urologist is a medical doctor who specializes in treatments and disorders related to male reproductive organs including prostate cancer, pelvis cancer, problems related to urinary retention. Hence, one must consult an experienced urologist to get hassle-free treatment.

What is the age limit to undergo this surgery?

Depending on various factors such as age, stage of cancer, an individual’s body is capable enough to get treated.
Before jumping onto a decision, doctors examine whether cancer has spread beyond the prostate or not. It is concluded by preparing a table comparing results of a biopsy and PSA levels along with CT scans, MRI, ultrasound and bone scans.
If cancer has not spread beyond the expected affected area, then a surgeon may consider radiation or hormone therapy, or pelvic lymph node dissection to remove lymph nodes from the affected pelvic.

Types of Radical Prostatectomy:

The prostate gland is under the gallbladder, in front of the rectum. There are three different approaches to stop this cancerous growth:

  • Open Surgery: a conventional surgical method in which surgery is performed by making a vertical 8-10 inch incision below the belly button.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Nowadays, surgeons perform surgeries with minimal complications and hence, it is mostly preferred over open surgery. In this surgery, a small fiber-optic tube (the laparoscope) is connected to a camera and is inserted through small incisions. The surgery takes place outside the body which is comparatively less painful. It is also called minimally-invasive surgery.
  • Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Surgery: As the term suggests, it means a 3-or-4 armed robot under the surgeon’s control and supervision, performs surgery using required surgical instruments. If a problem occurs, then a spare part is available at the hospital else the surgeon has to perform open surgery.

Open Surgery Vs Laparoscopic Surgery:

In 2003, only 9.2 percent of surgeries were done using the minimally invasive procedure, while this had increased to 43.2 percent in 2007. In 2009, following researches were made and they are:

  • The hospital demands a stay of two days in laparoscopic surgery while open surgery demands a stay of 3-4 days or even a week.
  • Only 2.7 percent of men required a blood transfusion in laparoscopic as compared to 20.8 percent of men in open surgery.
  • In open surgery, 14 percent of anastomotic stricture is a minimum requirement where internal parts are joined whereas laparoscopic demands only 5.8%.
  • Respiratory complication cases were also low in laparoscopic (4.3%) as compared to open surgery (6.6%).

Despite the above-mentioned statistical research, there was no change in the number of deaths between these two surgical approaches.

What is the success rate?

The general rule of any surgery is to cure the problem related to it. Therefore, in this case, the surgeon aims to cure prostate cancer only if it has not spread beyond the prostate gland.
After the cancerous part is removed, it is examined under a microscope to check whether it has reached to the edge of the prostate. In case, cancerous cells have spread, further treatments are required.
Men with limited prostate cancer have 85 percent chances of 10-year survival post surgery.
